abstract = "Aglomerados urbanos s{\~a}o tipicamente afetados por v{\'a}rios
radia{\c{c}}{\~a}o solar, temperatura e umidade.
qu{\'{\i}}mico BRAMS V5.0 (\emph{Brazilian Developments on the
Regional Atmospheric Modeling System}).
diminu{\'{\i}}ram.
{\`a}s caracter{\'{\i}}sticas da {\'a}rea urbana.
concentra{\c{c}}{\~a}o do CO, NO\$_{x}\$ e O\$_{3}\$. No
mar{\'{\i}}tima.
superf{\'{\i}}cie a altos n{\'{\i}}veis com a
movimentos ascendentes transportam os poluentes at{\'e} altos
n{\'{\i}}veis.
urbana, agravando a qualidade do ar. ABSTRACT: Urban areas are
typically affected by several environmental impacts of
urbanization, among which highlight the Urban Heat Island (UHI)
and high emissions of pollutants. The effect of the urban heat
island, by definition, is the temperature rising in urban areas in
relation to its surroundings. Trace gases typically emitted in
urban environments (carbon monoxide - CO, nitrogen oxides
NO\$_{x}\$, etc.) react chemically and form other pollutants,
such as ozone (O\$_{3}\$). Among other factors, the production
of secondary pollutants depends on the availability of solar
radiation, temperature and humidity. This study analyzes the
combined effects of UHI and air pollution in local weather
conditions in the Metropolitan Area of S{\~a}o Paulo (MASP) using
an observational data set, obtained from weather and of air
quality monitoring stations. Complementary, numerical simulations
were carried out with the regional chemical transport model BRAMS
V5.0 (Brazilian Developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling
System). The observational study aimed to identify the spatial and
temporal variability modes associated with UHI, as well as groups
of pollutants in the MASP. The observational dataset analysis of
the interaction of the UHI and pollutants included two methods:
the first identified a positive interaction between the
concentration of O\$_{3}\$ and PM10 with the intensification of
the UHI. For CO and NO\$_{x}\$, the results showed an increase
in concentration with a threshold value of the urban heat island
intensity (UHII), beyond that limit the concentration of
pollutants stagnated or declined. In the second method, there was
increase in the average concentration of O\$_{3}\$ and PM10 with
UHII, with significance statistic. In the numerical modeling
studies, three options of urban parameterization were analyzed;
with all of them satisfactorily representing the UHI in the MASP.
Nevertheless, the schemes with two-dimensional configuration
(canyons and roofs) represented more consistently the
characteristics of the urban area. The numerical simulations
showed in the temporal evolution a positive phase relationship
between the maximum concentration of O\$_{3}\$ and the maximum
UHII, besides the existence of a positive relationship between
strong ICU and the increase in CO, NO\$_{x}\$ and O\$_{3}\$
concentrations. In the spatial pattern, high concentrations of CO,
NO\$_{x}\$ e O3 were found on days with a higher heating surface
due to the delay in the entry sea breeze. In the vertical profile,
was identified in the concentration of pollutants from the surface
to high levels by intensifying the temperature and the UHI. This
increase in the concentration of pollutants is due to the higher
heating surface in urban areas, which results in the configuration
of urban breeze, so that the upward movement carries the
pollutants up to the higher levels. However, the presence of
downdrafts causes the return of urban pollutants, worsening the
air quality.",
